SHABBAT DATE
Genesis 23:1–25:18
Death of Sarah, finding a wife for Isaac, Abraham’s death.
This Parashat, meaning “the Life of Sarah” (Genesis 23:1–25:18) begins with the passing of Sarah at 127 years old. Avraham mourns her and arranges to buy a burial site. He purchases the cave of Machpelah from Ephron the Hittite for 400 shekels of silver, securing a permanent burial place for his family (Genesis 23:1–20).
Following this, Avraham makes an oath with his senior servant, placing him in charge of finding a wife for Yitzchak from among Avraham’s relatives, rather than from the Canaanites. The servant travels to the city of Nahor and prays for a sign from God to help him identify the chosen woman. As he finishes his prayer, Rivka, the daughter of Avraham’s nephew Bethuel, arrives at the well and fulfills the servant’s request by offering water to him and his camels (Genesis 24:1–20). The servant is invited to Rivka’s family home, where he recounts the events and his prayer. Rivka agrees to return with him, and when they arrive in Canaan, she meets Yitzchak, who is praying in the field. Yitzchak marries Rivka, and through their union, he finds comfort after the loss of his mother (Genesis 24:61–67).
The parasha concludes with the death of Avraham at the age of 175. Before his passing, he marries Keturah and fathers six additional sons. Avraham dies “at a good old age, satisfied with life,” and is buried beside Sarah in the cave of Machpelah by his sons Yitzchak and Ishmael (Genesis 25:1–10).
